The wedding of a child of a divorce can be a very. delicate. thing. As Susie’s daughter, Jen’s, nuptials drew closer, it’s fair to say that there was a good deal of apprehension and anxiety. Of course, the ceremony and reception came off without incident. The world did not explode. The bride was absolutely stunning. The newlywed couple, all smiles and high-fives. And the food was delicious.

Other observations from throughout the week:

  • On the off chance that any of them read this, the fact that I was unable to meet up with my friends and former coworkers leaves me saddened.
  • Hauling a single axle trailer on the West Virginia turnpike will cost an extra $0.25. Bummer.
  • Traveling from a drought-ridden area to a rain-soaked one in a 12 hour time span can be a shock to the system. Everything was so lush and green. As Susie said Monday morning, jogging at home felt like moving through a terrarium.
  • A man can balance a 16 foot aluminum ladder on his chin and a 14 year-old girl can fold herself like a pretzel.
  • Over-sized frisbees are fun for both man and beast.
  • Watching So You Think You Can Dance with a big group of people is a totally different experience from watching with your spouse alone.
  • Gas prices can inexplicably go up $0.18 on a Friday night.
  • It’s a sad day when $3.74 a gallon is a good price for gasoline. God bless South Carolina.
  • Turns out I can run four times in one week and not break anything!
  • In the middle of an extreme drought, we leave the state and inevitably, it rains at home.
  • Leaving the cat home alone for a week (we had a neighbor stop by daily) makes her crazy affectionate. Like keep you up all night, affectionate.
  • After returning from two well-lived-in homes, our’s seems empty by comparison.
  • A pool left alone for a week can, and will, grow swamp-level algae. Ewww.
  • Taking an extra day off to recover from a long trip is probably the smartest thing one can do.

Heading home to Ohio this week. Lots to do, crammed into the two days before we leave. Finding time to post an entry amid the chaos has been… a challenge. Jen is getting married on the 12th and we’ll be there the whole week before doing the family thing and all other sorts of helping out. Plenty of lunch and dinner plans are scheduled.

We have to pack up two dogs and a bird, clothes for a week for two people (plus fancy wedding attire), wedding gifts and dozen or so plants for the newlyweds’ new house. Neither one of our cars can handle that load. We’ve rented a U-Haul trailer.

What’s that sound? Our gas mileage plummeting. Sigh. It’ll take longer and be more expensive to get there, but it’ll be worth it.

The video above is from our most recent trip to Lake Jocassee. The first visit we’ve made in 2008. The lake continues to be lower each time we make the trip. Of course, this shouldn’t be a surprise, what with the record drought and all.

Mario Kart Wii update: progress has slowed, but I’m still plugging along. I’ve beaten the 50cc and 100cc races and unlocked several characters and vehicles. The 150cc has me stumped. Difficulty level increases significantly. I have the same problem with the online races. Must. Get. Better. at kart driving.
